December 2010 Knowledge Newsletter

Dear Friends,

I want to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season. The holiday season has traditionally been associated with miracles. For example, the miracle of Christ’s birth, the miracle of the oil burning for eight days instead of one for the Jewish people, the appearance of the star of Bethlehem guiding the wise men on their way to Jesus, etc. Since it is a season of miracles why don’t we create a few miracles of our own by helping others?

Be a Miracle Worker

The holiday season has become more associated with gift buying instead of celebrating the miracles that have occurred both in the past and that are happening around us all the time. A good example of a recent miracle is the rescue to the miners in Chili after two months. We often think we are only recipients of miracles when in fact we can create miracles of our own at anytime.

What defines a miracle? By definition it is an unexpected, extraordinary event with a happy ending. Imagine if someone came along and helped you out or gave you much needed money of the blue - would that not constitute a miracle?  These miracles occur everyday and are ones we can perform for others. Besides, helping others gives us “karmic bonus points” as I like to call them so when we need a miracle of our own we have money in the bank so to speak.

Perhaps is it wise to take a moment and think about what the holiday season means to you. Is this a time when you feel stressed out with gift buying, food preparation, keeping up traditions you no longer enjoy, having to cater to company or spend time with people you don’t really like? Do you give gifts to express your love and generosity or to fulfill your family’s expectations?

If gift giving is supposed to be an expression of our love for others, why do so many people feel stressed out by the holiday season? Shopping in crowded stores, the need to buy something for everyone on their list, the worry that maybe they forgot someone and there will be hell to pay later, the putting themselves in debt to fulfill the obligations they either placed on themselves or were placed upon them by others.

Too often we are focused on what we don’t have in our lives rather than being grateful for what we do have. Why not give yourself permission to do something different this year. Celebrate the joy and the love you have in your life by acknowledging what you have rather than focusing on what you don’t. Being grateful will bring more abundance into your life. Things to be grateful for could be your health, having a safe place to live, a clean environment to live in, having family and friends, having a job, a roof over your head, or any other number of other things.

A consciousness of oneness is where we are concerned with all others on this planet. This time of year is a perfect opportunity to consider those in need or those less fortunate? A good idea would be to donate the amount spent on one or more gifts to the charity of your choice or in the name of a person you planned to gift. You may spend the same money but you would most likely feel better that you contributed to bringing joy to someone who has less in their life.

Showing our love for others even if they are unknown to us is really what oneness consciousness is all about. This form of giving will warm your heart and contribute to the feeling of oneness. If you prefer to volunteer, donate food, clothing or other needed items to the less fortunate or help out in some way, this would be still provide the same feeling of fulfillment.

Many people are choosing to move away from the materialism of the holiday season. While this may bring hardship to those in the retail business, it is also a reflection of where people’s consciousness is moving. This idea of giving charity instead of gifts is being promoted in the media but naturally not by the retailers. I personally feel it is a wonderful idea.

Celebrate the holidays by creating miracles of your own by doing some random acts of kindness for others instead of buying gifts. Perhaps you could make a meal for someone, offer them a service or help they would appreciate receiving. If you are not sure what they would like or want, ask them. Give them a card with a choice of possibilities or just say this card entitles the bearer to the service of their choice. Personally I think many people would appreciate this kind of gift. It would demonstrate that you really want to give something from the heart that would be meaningful to them.

The holiday season is about spending time with family and friends in a meaningful way. If you don’t have any family or friends to spend the holidays with try going to a senior home or hospital and visiting some of the residents who may have no one visiting them. I am sure they would very much appreciate having some company. Help out in a soup kitchen. There are many things you could do that do not involve buying gifts that would be very rewarding and help others in the process.

Become a miracle maker all year round. Spend more quality time with your children, family members or friends. Become a regular volunteer, collect for the charity of your choice, become a big brother or sister or choose from any number of loving activities you could do for others. Many people feel isolated and sense that others don’t care about them. Adopt an old person, a neighbor, a child or friend in need and call or see them regularly. Call friends up and ask how they are instead of waiting for them to call you. Just think of how good it will make you feel. Your options are unlimited so don’t wait. Become a miracle worker today!
